Further solidifying my hatred towards Microsoft

Ok, I said I was done blogging. But this deserves a post. This is one of the IE devs answering the question about why IE7 doesn't support the CSS generated content tag. Link here

Brian,

As we have stated before we did not get to generated content in this release. It is something we want to get to in a future release. In IE7 we prioritised our work to fix issues with teh IE6 implementation of CSS adn added support for selectors and fixed positioning. We know we have more work to do in this area and are looking forward to it. Generated content is a major work item but definitely something we want to get to.

Thanks

-Dave

Dave/Microsoft: DON'T RELEASE IE7 UNTIL YOU GET THINGS RIGHT. News flash -- when releasing DESKTOP PRODUCTS, you can't be Microsoft and release a "beta" version for three reasons:

  1. You're Microsoft
Old people download your crap whenever you tell them to. Tell them to when you're DONE and all the BUGS ARE FIXED
  2. IE7 isn't a WEB APPLICATION
You're not Google! You don't have the luxury of releasing Beta 1.0.1, Beta 1.4.65, Beta 1.6.2, and 5 years later, Beta 1.7.7. This is a ONE TIME downloaded APPLICATION that users run off of their computers. I know you guys go to bed every night and cry on your pillows wishing you could have half the brain that Sergey or Larry have, but the fact is YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T. You're so out of touch with reality that your headquarters are in WASHINGTON, which is actually 14 hours north of the place where innovation is actually instantiated; Silicon Valley.
  3. Do you want developer friends?
Or have you guys just given up on all the talented developers? Generalized statement, but hey, it's pretty much true -- they've all switched to Linux by now.

I am going to install Linux on my IBM T60. Microsoft: you just lost another customer; but this one's not switching to Apple OS.

This post is due to the fact that I am doing some web dev work, and I just can't stand how Microsoft forces Internet Explorer onto everyone, especially the latest version of IE7. Have you guys [MS] ever heard of WEB STANDARDS? Or do you still think it's 1990 and you can make up your own rules? I hope Google comes out with an OS soon; 100% free and 100% supported by AdWords... That'll be the day :)

Ok, done blogging for the next few days/weeks... This time I'm serious.

I’m reading “Built To Last”

I'm only four chapters into the book, and I am about to put it down. It has a lot of great research and sound principles behind everything they say, but I think the book is completely outdated. Who wants to build a company that lasts anymore? I'm talking about Web 2.0 when I say this. Look at all the companies in the valley though -- they either get bought out, tank, or turn into a "lasting" company (i.e., Google, Yahoo, Oracle). But those companies are very few and far between; there's no point in creating a company -- build a product off of a great idea and sell. I understand that there are probably hundreds of companies that don't have this model, but the majority do. Anyways, that's my opinion on this book so far.

You forgot the memo: Less is More

This guy must hate 37signals !!!

Too much!

Wow... This type of crap is rampant on the web though; it's so annoying it's not even funny. The only ones people should have is Del.icio.us and Digg -- the rest are garbage.

FYI.

His blog is cool though, I must give him credit; I really like the content -- except too much Scoble-centric posts. But hey, who am I to throw stones ? It's just the same as my problem with posting about Cuban's recent posts.

What I learned at the SixApart Seminar

Ok so this is just going through my notes and writing the most important of the important.

The blogging cycle: Anil Dash (speaker) says it best on his own blog. Just check that here.

Email, Instant Messenging, and SMS are interruptions and they disappear; blogs aren't, and posts are there forever.

Feeds are a beautiful thing; they overcome inertia. They're notifications without obligations.

We're in the age of "personal or participory media"

Ok, I learned tons more, but this is my opinion on business blogging:

It is a complete waste of time.

If you're a Web 2.0 company and you're trying to win, blogging will have little to nothing to do with your success. It may attract some attention to your product, but at the end of the day, the product is what the users are going to be interacting with, not what you're posting on your blog.

Blogging takes away from product development. I think it even takes away from product synergy. Talking to people about your product is probably one of the most detremental things you can do to your synergy, and that's exactly what blogging does, on a world wide scale.

Don't get me wrong -- I think blogging is great; I just think it's a waste of time for businesses... Build a great product, execute a great marketing campaign, and you'll be successful (a million other things go into it, but that's the gest)... Business blogging should be used solely for customer service ONCE the product has been launched and is in the final stages of beta. I'm sure a lot of people will try to refute my argument, but take the case study of Intel: a year ago, their IT department began blogging; their shares are down $5 this year, and AMD is kicking their ass.

Need I say more?

SixApart seminar very informative

The seminar just wrapped up and everyone's going for the cocktail reception... Can't go to that cause of age :(. I was the only one with that problem, so that's a good thing I guess. Anyways, the seminar was great, I met Anil Dasg and talked to him for a bit, he's a really nice guy (the first employee of SixApart). I'm currently stuck in SF traffic, but I'll be sure to write about what I have learned wheb I get home. One thing that really pissed me off was the parking garage, I'll write about it all later.

I wish I could go to Web 2.0 Con this year!

For the last few weeks, I've been listening to all of the conversations from Web 2.0 con in SF from 2005. I registered for the conference this year, starting a week from today. EVERYONE is going to be there...

Marissa Mayer
Mark Zuckerberg
Niklas Zennstrom
Kevin Rose
Jeffrey Bezos

And the list goes ON AND ON... And the two people that are probably going that I want to meet the most: Robert Scoble and Joanne Colan. Ahhh!

So this is what I just decided: I'm going to the hotel the morning of Nov 9th to see if I can meet Robert or Joanne. I'll bring a camera and see if I can meet anyone cool...

I love this business.
