Great new restaurant in Downtown Mountain View December 30, 2006

The place is El Grullense Grill; it recently opened and I had lunch there for the first time. Their beef tacos are stellar.

152 Castro Street
Mountain View, CA 94041

This is probably the only restaurant endorsement I will ever blog about; I’m feeling nice today (very rare).

Great article on Web 2.0 “bubble” December 29, 2006

Click here… It’s basically two guys arguing about the Web 2.0 “bubble” that is forming right now.

I am no Democrat, but John Edwards gets my vote December 29, 2006

Posted by sdpurtill in : Uncategorized , 3comments

First of all, there is no Libertarian candidate up for the 08 election, so I am free to vote for whoever I want. By upbringing, I am very conservative; but let me tell you why John Edwards already has my vote for the 2008 election.

#1 - He announced that he is running on YouTube
How effing cool is that? Obviously you have some campaign managers that know what is going on in the world
#2 - Robert Scoble was invited to go and follow his campaign
Yes — THE Scobleizer, is on the road right now covering the campaign. Again, how effing cool is that?
#3 - He is on Facebook
#4 - He is on Myspace
#5 - He is on Flickr
#6 - His campaign managers must understand the word Web 2.0…
#7 - He takes pictures of himself helping to rebuild New Orleans with little kids with shovels in the background
Ok, that’s just a fat joke… That’s a reason I wouldn’t vote for him — Mark Cuban’s post on this.

And for those reasons, he has my vote. Now, if any Republican (like McCain) hires a campaign manager that has a clue about Web 2.0, I’ll vote for him instead, simply because I’d rather see a Republican in office.

Thank you John Edwards, you have my vote.

I am speechless December 29, 2006

Technology doesn’t surprise me anymore. I’m not wowed by all the new advances we have made in robotics in the last 10 years, I’m not wowed by the Nintendo Wii’s motion sensing technology, quite simply, technology has become too norm for me to think much of it. But five minutes ago, something just happened… That wowed the hell out of me.

Go to google.com/maps. Do a Find Business search for say, Borders near Mountain View, CA (I’m at Monvia right now). So all the results come up with a little link “call” next to the business telephone numbers. At first I was like, Yeah Right, Google can’t make my phone call a business. So I tried it out. This is where the crazy part comes in:

My phone gets called by a 650 number (local), so I answer it. On my computer screen, it says “Connected, now calling the business”. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, all in real time. I connected to the Borders in Palo Alto, asked them how long they’d be open, and hung up. Now that is what I call convenience.

I am speechless.

Further solidifying my hatred towards Microsoft December 18, 2006

Ok, I said I was done blogging. But this deserves a post. This is one of the IE devs answering the question about why IE7 doesn’t support the CSS generated content tag. Link here

Brian,

As we have stated before we did not get to generated content in this release. It is something we want to get to in a future release. In IE7 we prioritised our work to fix issues with teh IE6 implementation of CSS adn added support for selectors and fixed positioning. We know we have more work to do in this area and are looking forward to it. Generated content is a major work item but definitely something we want to get to.

Thanks

-Dave

Dave/Microsoft: DON’T RELEASE IE7 UNTIL YOU GET THINGS RIGHT. News flash – when releasing DESKTOP PRODUCTS, you can’t be Microsoft and release a “beta” version for three reasons:

  1. You’re Microsoft
Old people download your crap whenever you tell them to. Tell them to when you’re DONE and all the BUGS ARE FIXED
  2. IE7 isn’t a WEB APPLICATION
You’re not Google! You don’t have the luxury of releasing Beta 1.0.1, Beta 1.4.65, Beta 1.6.2, and 5 years later, Beta 1.7.7. This is a ONE TIME downloaded APPLICATION that users run off of their computers. I know you guys go to bed every night and cry on your pillows wishing you could have half the brain that Sergey or Larry have, but the fact is YOU OBVIOUSLY DON’T. You’re so out of touch with reality that your headquarters are in WASHINGTON, which is actually 14 hours north of the place where innovation is actually instantiated; Silicon Valley.
  3. Do you want developer friends?
Or have you guys just given up on all the talented developers? Generalized statement, but hey, it’s pretty much true — they’ve all switched to Linux by now.

I am going to install Linux on my IBM T60. Microsoft: you just lost another customer; but this one’s not switching to Apple OS.

This post is due to the fact that I am doing some web dev work, and I just can’t stand how Microsoft forces Internet Explorer onto everyone, especially the latest version of IE7. Have you guys [MS] ever heard of WEB STANDARDS? Or do you still think it’s 1990 and you can make up your own rules? I hope Google comes out with an OS soon; 100% free and 100% supported by AdWords… That’ll be the day :)

Ok, done blogging for the next few days/weeks… This time I’m serious.

Taking a break… December 18, 2006

Posted by sdpurtill in : Blogging , add a comment

I won’t be blogging for the next few days (maybe even weeks). I have to get a lot of work done, and that tends to not happen when I am doing 2-3 posts per day.

Anyways, I hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Applying to colleges takes soo much time December 13, 2006

Posted by sdpurtill in : Books, College , 1 comment so far

I’ve redefined writer’s block: for the last three days, I have been trying to think of what to write for the Stanford 2007 Long Essay. It finally came to me tonight, so I am in the middle of writing a [hopefully] compelling enough piece of writing that an admissions officer who reads it will get tricked into thinking I’m smart and let me in :p. I don’t deserve to get into Stanford based off of my scholastic achievements, so my essays are extra important.

Ah, yes, the title of my post: not that the actualy applying to college takes a lot of time, but the psychological trauma of the fear of not getting into any of the colleges I apply to is weighing heavily on my productivity these days.

Do they have therapy for post-application-depression? I’m going to need a good dose of it if they do… :D

I caught up on a ton of reading in Tahoe: I finished Built to Last, and read Freakonomics in two days. Freakonomics is one of the funnest books I’ve ever read, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to kill some time — it’s not that long, about 200 pages, and can be read through really fast.

Blogging in Tahoe! December 10, 2006

I’ve been in Tahoe the last few days, it’s been ridiculously fun. It’s snowing right now, and I just got out of the spa… It was so great, we were in the spa and snow was just going crazy on us! Anyways, I’m out. Going back to the cabin to play some Mexican Train and read!

World’s richest 1% own 40% of all wealth, UN report discovers

Now read this quote from Atlas Shrugged:

“We’ve heard it shouted that the industrialist is a parasite, that his workers support him, create his wealth, make his luxury possible – and what would happen to him if they walked out? Very well. I propose to show to the world who depends on whom, who supports whom, who is the source of wealth, who makes whose livelihood possible and what happens to whom when who walks out.”

And I will laugh in the face of anybody that can refute that.
